Dental complaints are on the rise: is your indemnity up to it?

Complaints against dental professionals are on the rise. The GDC received 1,766 new fitness to practise concerns in 2025, a 26% increase on the year before. Concerns about dental care professionals, including dental nurses, rose by 45%.

Why are complaints increasing?

  • More patients are paying privately. With NHS appointments hard to find, more people are turning to private care, and paying patients tend to have higher expectations.
  • Complaining is easier than ever. Patients can now use AI tools to draft detailed complaint letters in minutes.
  • One complaint can lead to more. An unhappy patient may complain to the practice, raise a concern with the GDC and make a compensation claim.

Is your cover up to it?

It's worth checking your indemnity before you need it. Ask yourself:

  • Is my cover a contractual insurance policy?
  • Does it include civil claims and GDC investigations?
  • Will it cover claims made after I leave a role or retire?
  • Does it cover every treatment I carry out?
